Points of Interest
The Hillary Trail takes trampers on a self guided, four-day walk through native forest and rugged coastline of Auckland region. The trail in the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park is named after the intrepid mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary.
The walk is suitable for people with a high level of fitness and experience of tramping and is best done in the warmer seasons. It includes hilly sections and exposed coastline, and the track is of varying standard. Along the trail, popular scenic landmarks are passed including Muriwai Beach, Piha Beach and Karekare Beach where the hollywood film The Piano was filmed.
Walkers do not need to book the trail but will need to book any of the Auckland Council campgrounds along the way. There are a number of places to stay along the trail including campgrounds and private lodges.
Walkers will need to arrange their own transport to the start of the track at Arataki Visitor Centre and from the end at Muriwai.
